Город на северо-востоке штата Флорида, на его Атлантическом побережье. 11,5 тыс. жителей (2000). Крупный центр туризма [Historic St. Augustine], рыбная промышленность. Старейшее европейское поселение на территории современных США. Основан в 1565 испанским конкистадором П. Менендесом де Авилесом [Menendez de Aviles, Pedro]. В XVI-XVII вв. город неоднократно подвергался нападениям английских пиратов. Для его защиты была построена крепость Сан-Марко [San Marco; Castillo de San Marcos National Monument]. В 1763-83 был в руках англичан, затем вновь отошел к Испании. В целом, большую часть колониального существования оставался небольшим гарнизонным городком. Отошел к США в 1821 при покупке Флориды. Среди достопримечательностей - старый город [Old City], многие здания, претендующие на звание старейших, например: "Старейший дом" [Oldest House; Gonzalez-Alvarez House] (неоднократно перестраивавшееся, но, возможно, старейшее сохранившееся в США здание), Собор Св. Августина [Cathedral of St. Augustine] (построен около 1790, реконструирован в 1887) - старейший католический собор в стране, "Старейшая деревянная школа" [Oldest Wooden Schoolhouse] (построена в 1750-60 из кипариса и кедра), площадь Конституции [Plaza de La Constitucion], вокруг которой развивался город, Музей реставрированного испанского квартала [St. Augustine's Restored Spanish Quarter Museum] и др.
